Blythewood began as Doko, a depot stop on the railroad linking Columbia and Charlotte; after Union forces destroyed that line in February 1865 the community rebuilt, took the Blythewood name around 1877 for the local Blythewood Female Institute, and incorporated December 24, 1879.
