The Congaree riverbank at Cayce has been inhabited for roughly 12,000 years, saw a Native village Hernando de Soto reached in 1540, grew into the community of Granby by the 1760s after 1730s European settlement, and became the modern city of Cayce in 1914, built partly on the strength of the Guignard Brick Works that ran from 1803.
