A planned lake community that became a city
Forest Acres grew out of a 1920s country-club development that Columbia attorney John Hughes Cooper and his brother Paul built around what had been Dent's Pond, and formally incorporated in September 1935 after Quinine Hill residents organized on Christmas Day 1934 to unlock federal funding for a municipal water system.
